British soldier from the 29th regiment - 1742 King George's War

This is my interpretation of a British soldier from the 29th Regiment of Foot during King George’s War.

This wasn’t an easy project to research as it’s a little way outside my knowledge zone, so I kept as close as possible to the original drawings while also looking at original artefacts.

I initially started from a sketch in my sketchbook which I then refined and painted in Photoshop. I used different brushes to differentiate the foreground from the background in a more painterly way. I always love the look of paintings from the old masters, and try to base my colours and lighting on those old works without allowing them to become too dark. The old paintings have collected grime and dust over the years, making them darker than they were originally intended. Here, I tried to match that style and feel while also keeping it fairly light. I hope you enjoy my latest work, I feel like I‘ve learned a lot while studying the lighting techniques from classical paintings particularly in the rendering of flesh tones.
